Arrowtown Masonic Lodge, Lodge Kilwinning, Arrowtown

December 2008

The Lodge was built in 1888. In 2006, it was apparent that certain structural repairs were necessary and general upgrading of the facilities and services were desirable.

At this time an investigation was carried out regarding opening up and use of the building by the public for exhibitions etc at times when it was not in use by the Lodge.

The project fell into two parts. The first included strengthening of the roof structure to eliminate further sagging, repairs to the roof and new spoutings, re-wiring, remodelling of the kitchen and foyer and decorating.

However, once stripping out commenced an extremely rare decorative painted interior was revealed, including stencilled Masonic symbols, painted swags of drapery and the moon and stars. A painted canvas floor cloth at the centre of the floor was also revealed.

This interior was painstakingly reinstated and repaired, new heating and lighting installed and interpretation of the building’s history and symbolism installed.
