December 1995
The Coronation Bath House was built in 1911 on the beach in Queenstown Bay to commemorate the coronation of George V. By 1993 only the central octagon remained and it was run down and subject to vandalism.
The Queenstown Lakes District Council looked for a new use for it and Jackie took it over converting it into an architectural studio for herself and another local architect, Gillian MacLeod.
Public access to the building was retained by the formation of a verandah across the front, but it was always Jackie’s intention that the building returned to full public use and this came about in 1996 when Jackie again converted it to a restaurant.
The original “wings” on each side containing changing rooms were re-instated in a new form to provide more space for the restaurant but they were carried out in a sympathetic style. The interior was fitted out with a small but high quality kitchen and the building lifted off the ground by approximately 500mm to avoid the regular floods that had plagued Jackie during her tenure.
