December 2007
The Courthouse was designed by WF Burwell in 1878 and became a central feature in the establishment of early Queenstown. It fulfilled this role for more than 125 years before being replaced by a new building in 2007.
The site was purchased by Ngai Tahu Property Ltd and the Courthouse was converted to a bar and restaurant.
Following completion of a conservation plan and re-use analysis by Jackie Gillies, the new tenants and their architects embraced the concept of retaining the character of the building complete with its original court room features – Judge’s Podium, Dock and Witness Stand – as well as the hierarchy of spaces from the Court Room itself, through the Judge’s Chambers to the court offices.
Close liaison with the NZ Historic Places Trust was necessary at all times due to the building’s Category 1 rating, and Jackie remained as the heritage advisor throughout the project.
