Quinns Arcade, Waimate

April 2008

A decorative brick shopping arcade, built in 1907 in Waimate, and converted into an early cinema by 1918. The Arcadia, as it was then known, was badly damaged by fire in 1955 and has been used as a storage facility ever since.

Project Waimate, a local charitable trust, raised funds to purchase the building in 2007 and commissioned Jackie Gillies + Associates to prepare a Conservation Plan and Re-use analysis.

A new mixed use for the building is now planned, with Concept Designs prepared by Jackie Gillies + Associates incorporating features of both the original shopping arcade and the picture theatre, as well as including modern elements where appropriate.

Conservation works associated with the Re-use will include treatment and repair of the valuable early-twentieth century plasterwork in the picture theatre.
