Building Conservation

Jackie Gillies + Associates offer a full range of building conservation services from carrying out the initial historical research, to preparing conservation plans, scopes of work and technical specifications for repair and remedial work to any building, large or small. We will then go on to supervise work on site and can also providing guidance in relation to funding applications.

Historical Research

We have a wide range on contacts in both national and local libraries, museums and archives, and are experienced in carrying out thorough and efficient historical research. We are particularly focused on tracking down surviving historic photographs of the building or site in question, as these can provide a vast amount of information not available from written sources. The historic research, once completed, will be presented in document form and acts as an invaluable record of the building’s development through the ages.

Conservation Plan

The conservation plan is the primary document used both in establishing a clear picture of the building in its current state and in informing any decisions about its future. Each conservation plan is different, tailored to the needs of the individual building or site, however a typical plan would include a Summary of Historic Research, Architectural Description, Inventory, Condition Assessment, Statement of Significance and Recommendations for Conservation and Repair.

Scopes of Work and Technical Specifications

A Scope of Works can be prepared detailing the exact type and extent of works required to the building. This will be suitable for pricing by a building contractor or for inclusion in tender documentation. Technical Specifications can also be prepared, detailing the nature and performance values of any new materials required to be used in the repair or conservation works.

Site Supervision

Jackie Gillies + Associates can also offer site supervision services, ensuring that conservation and repair works are carried out in compliance with building codes and according to best conservation practice. In this capacity we can also act as referees to the funding bodies, ensuring them that works have been carried out and completed satisfactorily.

Funding Applications

We have good working relationships with all major funding bodies and can offer advice and assistance with the application process.
